Ship a car to Mongolia
Cars, 4x4s and vans from Germany by container to Ulaanbaatar: sea freight to Tianjin/Xingang, then on by rail through China – with export customs, transit handling and tracking from a single source.
Import rules at a glance
- There is no legal age limit – but import tax rises sharply with age and engine size (bands 0–3, 4–6, 7–9 and 10+ years).
- On top come 5 % customs duty and VAT on the value of goods, duty and tax.
- Left-hand drive vehicles from Europe are no problem (right-hand traffic).
- Transit through China runs in a sealed container under customs bond – we organise this with our partner in Tianjin.
Documents we need
- Registration certificate Part I and II (originals)
- Vehicle deregistered or with export plates
- Purchase contract or invoice with VIN, make, model, year, engine size and fuel type
- Copy of the shipper’s ID card or passport; for companies the EORI number
- Name and address of the consignee in the destination country
- Bill of lading to Xingang marked “in transit to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia” with a Mongolian consignee
- VIN, engine number, engine size and year on invoice and bill of lading

Good to know
At the Erenhot/Zamyn-Uud border the cargo is transferred because of the different rail gauge – allow some buffer time. Several vehicles in one 40’ container significantly reduce the cost per vehicle.
