Import rules at a glance
- Left-hand drive only; accident, flood and total-loss vehicles are prohibited.
- Age limits for registration apply per emirate (in Dubai and Abu Dhabi mostly up to about 10 years) – please clarify in advance. Classic cars need a special permit.
- European vehicles (non-GCC specs) are allowed but must pass the local technical inspection.
- 5 % customs duty on the CIF value plus 5 % VAT. In the free zone vehicles for re-export remain duty-free.
Documents we need
- Registration certificate Part I and II (originals)
- Vehicle deregistered or with export plates
- Purchase contract or invoice with VIN, make, model, year, engine size and fuel type
- Copy of the shipper’s ID card or passport; for companies the EORI number
- Name and address of the consignee in the destination country
- VIN, engine number and colour on the bill of lading
- Copy of the consignee’s Emirates ID or passport

Good to know
Dubai is a major hub for vehicles: via the Jebel Ali free zone vehicles can be stored duty-free and resold to third countries – the consignee handles the re-export declaration locally.
